Event Logging

The event log is a basic resource that helps provide information about network traffic, security, usage and other conditions. An event log stores this data for retrieval by administrators, security professionals or automated security tools to help manage various aspects such as availability, security, performance and transparency. This standard sets a minimum requirement. Contracts, grants, regulations, operational needs and steps to mitigate risk may require additional logging. Appendix A of the standard provides illustrative guidance on event logging for information security.

This standard supports UC’s information security policy, IS-3, and it applies to all Locations and all new software developed by or for the University of California as a network accessible production application. For information about cybersecurity resources near you, visit Location Information Security Resources.
